Deodorants are personal care products that you use every day. That makes the toxic accumulation caused by their use, even more dangerous for your health. Deodorants commonly available in the market contain chemicals that are cheaply available for production but cause lingering damage to your body including causing cancers, skin diseases, endocrine dysfunction and reproductive complications. You have to make the switch to natural deodorants not just to preserve your own health but also to save this planet from the choke-hold of these hazardous chemicals.

1. Use of aluminum

The only way, use of aluminum can be good for you is if you are using as a material to build your home. It also unfortunately, happens to be one of the most commonly used ingredient in deodorants. Common use of aluminum in deodorants has been linked to onset of Alzheimer’s in people after the age of 60. A study found, aluminium use in the body increased the Alzheimer’s risk by 60%. Studies have also found correlation in the use of chemical cosmetics including deodorants and increase in certain types of breast cancers.

2. They use triclosan that is destroying planet’s aquatic life

Commonly found in deodorants, shampoos, soaps, face washes and hand-sanitizers and laundry detergents, triclosan is an anti-bacterial chemical. But it can cause permanent damage to multiple amphibian and aquatic species by altering their naturally occurring biochemistry. It kills pro-life aquatic bacteria and algae that provide ecological balance. It has been found in guts of dolphins too.

3. Use of propylene glycol in deodorants: a health hazard in waiting

Another commonly used and cheap ingredient in deodorants and other cosmetic products is the petroleum based compound called propylene glycol. The biggest problem with the chemical is, its quality as a penetration enhancer. When it mixes with other harmful chemicals present in your cosmetics, it can deepen its absorption into your body. Use of PG has been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, complications in fetal development, neurological problems, and endocrine dysfunction.

It can also cause severe skin conditions like allergic reactions, ICD or irritant contact dermatitis, Urticarial problems. If use of a deodorant causes irritation and itching sensation, it most likely has to do with the presence of PG in it.

4. Herbal essential oils treat your skin with delicate care

Now, speaking about natural deodorants, they contain essential oils carefully picked for their therapeutic value and effervescence. These plant based essential oils are chosen keeping in mind the delicate epidermal layers of your skin in the armpit.

Using tea tree oil, lavender or vetiver do not block the skin pores in your armpit like chemical deodorants do. Their use leaves the skin smooth and less irritable. Some of these natural essential oils also help in tightening skin pores.

5. Keeping the good bacteria

The basic difference in how natural deos work vis a vis the chemical ones is, the chemical deos block off the skin pores which results in toxic accumulation overtime. The natural deodorants do not block the skin pores to reduce body odor. By not blocking off the pores, they let the skin breathe and the good bacteria thrive. The artificial deodorants work on minimizing perspiration. But your body needs to sweat in order to cool off. How about using natural deodorants with anti-bacterial function, so you sweat healthy without smelling foul?
