We spend much more time these days looking at computer screens, television and other handheld devices than ever before. If we want our vision to stay fit we need to pause every once and a while for a few cumulative self-care moments. Additionally, healthy habits that support our vision will also work to help the entire eye area. Helping the skin around the eyes, while improving good looks, will also actually help maintain good vision.
12 Self Care tips for your Eyes
- Drink plenty of water. Water plays a very important role in maintaining the elasticity of the skin. Internal dryness also has an adverse effect on the eyes themselves.
- Avoid strong stimulants; depressants, coffee (actually dehydrates the body), soda and alcohol can stress the organs and thereby make the skin loose and flabby.
- Nicotine constricts blood vessels and makes it harder for your body to absorb nutrients. Lack of nutrients among other things can cause dark circles. Eat plenty of fresh, organic produce that is rich in antioxidants – and take some time to cleanse regularly.
- Lack of sleep is detrimental to your eyes. Going to bed before pitta time begins (10pm) will help you get quality sleep and will allow this pitta-cycle to gently detoxify your body while you rest.
- Rest your eyes often…look up once in a while when reading, take little breaks from the computer.
- Gentle eye exercises such as squeezing your eyes shut and then opening them wide helps tone the skin around the eyes and will help your vision as well.
- Rub your palms together quickly for 8-10 seconds. Close the eyes and gently rest the palm of your hands over your eyes without pressing. Hold for one minute while breathing in and out slowly to release stress. Repeat 2-3 times.
- To help with puffiness & dark circles, lightly tap under your eyes with 1-2 fingers to increase blood circulation.
- The skin is like an elastic band – If you keep tugging, rubbing and pulling on it, it will eventually lose elasticity. Be gentle when removing or inserting contact lenses and use cotton balls when removing makeup.
- Try incorporating “nasya” in your daily routine. Applying nasya oil (like you would apply any nose drops) not only helps in alleviating dark circles but it also has the great benefit of calming the mind.
- Yoga poses that strengthen the eyes include: the Bhujangasana (snake pose), Surya Namaskara (sun salutation), and Shavasana (rest pose).
Do I need an eye cream?
Dryness (vata) and heat (pitta) are two aspects that can be helped with the correct eye cream.
Dryness
A well-formulated, natural eye cream can provide support for the delicate skin around the eyes, and can have a powerful rejuvenating effect. The skin around the eyes is ten times thinner than the rest of your facial skin, and getting thinner with age, as vata increases. That skin is usually more sensitive and especially vulnerable to free radical damage (from environmental exposure, unhealthy lifestyle choices, stress etc).
There are very few oil glands around the eyes thus less natural moisture present. This is why eye creams are usually richer and more moisturizing than your regular facial cream.
Shankara Anti-Age Eye Cream, being formulated along Ayurvedic principles, can also help balance the fire element in the eyes. Have you ever wondered why people use cucumber slices on the eyes during facials? According to Ayurveda the eyes are Pitta in nature which simply means that there is a lot of heat naturally present. Cucumbers are known to be very cooling and revitalizing and do bring great relief to any eye irritation. Rose is also very soothing and regenerating and is wonderful for the eyes.
Both cucumber and rose are foundational in Shankara’s Anti-Age Eye Cream.
There is also an abundance of sodium hyaluronate to help reduce fine lines caused by dehydration. Sodium hyaluronate is the most effective humectant available, and has the ability to bind moisture in the amount of one thousand times its molecular weight. This skin regenerating formula contains over 40 active ingredients including the powerful antioxidant CoQ10.
How to apply an eye cream correctly
To avoid stretching the skin around the eyes, dab lightly using your ring finger (you will usually use less pressure) and move from the outer corner to the inner corner of the eye and then complete your circle going over the eye lid and back to where you started.
